"Es activista" o "Es una activista"?

me suena raro decir, "Es activista" pero sé que no se suele decir "una" con un profesión.
alguien sabe cual es correcta?

The only time you would use "una" (or "un" in the case of a male) is if you have a descriptor along with the profession. Example: "Es una activista famosa" vs. "Mi hermana es activista." This is true of all professions: "Mi hermano es médico" vs. "Mi hermano es un médico famoso."

No tienes que usar ningunos artículos antes de una profesión.

Why not, since there are "nail artists" or "makeup designers" 
With my anti-makeup attitude I'd probably end up being an activist, jejeje.
