Colombian/Mexican vocabulary

Question

To enrich your Spanish vocabulary, I am sending today some common Colombian/Mexican words and expressions. The first translation is the way we say it in Colombia. The second one, in italic, is the way they say it in Mexico.

If Heidita is around, she could probably tell us how they say it in Spain.

Turkey. Pavo. Guajolote.

Sidewalk. Acera. Banqueta.

Trunk. Maletero. Cajuela

Owl. Búho o Lechuza. Tecolote.

Pen (ball point). Bolígrafo o Lapicero. Pluma

Stamp. Estampilla. Timbre.

Rent. Alquilar. Rentar.

Red pepper. Ají. Chile.

Tough. Verraco. Canijo o Cañón.

Secondary Studies. Bachillerato. Prepa.

It is not fare. No es justo. No se vale.

Good person. Buena persona o Buena gente. Buena onda.

To get angry. Ponerse bravo. Tener coraje.

To get naked . Empelotarse. Encuerarse.

It is important to clarify that all the Mexican expressions mentioned above are not the only ones used there, I know for a fact that in Mexico, as well as in Colombia, in every state people use their own expressions. These are not indeed the way everybody say it in Mexico. I just live here surrounded by a lot of Mexican friends and from them I have just picked up the words and expressions I have been sharing with you.

In Mexico,we say pavo as well. I still have yet to hear guajolote.

Nikkis, es posible que te pase a ti lo que a muchos colombianos. En Colombia tenemos 24 departamentos (estados) y en cada departamento tienen palabras y expresiones diferentes. Incríble, ¿verdad - RicardoP, Oct 23, 2009
