The Span¡shD!ct dictionary says:

Foster-child = Hijo o hija de leche

My own big dictionary says:

Foster-child = Hijo o hija de acogida

See Heidita's reply. Change this reply to say "Niño o niña de acogida" not "hijo/a de acogida" - Moe, OCT 23, 2009

Foster-child = Hijo o hija de acogida

Niño de acogida, this is the word to use.

You would explain:

Tengo un niño que vive conmigo en régimen de acogida, no es un niño adoptado.

Many people confuse this with adopted child.

niño criado en otra familia

WordReference.com
