I "Googled" the phrase "fines legales" and the hits I was lead to suggested, several times, that:

fines legales = legal purposes

I hope this will be some help to you.

I agree that when you enter "fines legales" in the translator, "legal purposes" is what is spit out. But note the "may not be accurate" message next to those responses. Also note that translating "legal purposes" gives you "los efectos legales".

Now translate "fines" in the dictionary and scroll down to the bottom of the page where the Spanish language entries are located. You'll notice that the "sustantivo" form of "fine" is a synonym of "multa", which means "fine" (the english "fine") or "penalty". Hence, "legal fines".

Again, this is why context is important, and an example of why we should be careful when using non-experts (legal or translation) to translate legal documents, or any other professional jargon.

I agree -- always double check a definition with another source!

Rey, the sustantivo is just "fin," not "fine", that's why it's fines legales in the plural. This, I think, is the part that got tricky.

Ah, "fin"! Now it all makes sense. You really do have to make mistakes to learn, and this forum is great for making you feel comfortable making mistakes, and helping you understanding them. Thanks. - jrey0474, Oct 22, 2009

Fines legales = Statutory requirements: requisitos / disposiciones legales

according to this site: Glosario de Términos Legales

I would recommend that if you are trying to research legal terms that you should, instead of using general education sites such as this one, do a google search using terms such as "términos legales" or "diccionario de términos legales."

The information that you receive by doing it this way will probably be more accurate and more reliable. I would also suggest that if you find what you are looking for that you cross check this definition with other sources as well. grin

I'm pretty sure it means "For legal fines", but a little context would help. "Fines" and "multa" can mean the same thing in the legal context.
