"le ha perdido la cara"
What does "le ha perdido la cara" mean, in a sporting (tennis) context. Is it he lost his nerve?

I am seeing this in football:
It means: they didn't lose control.
Like: they were always looking at the face of their opponent, never the back, like falling behing them.
I guess this is the context:
In this case Federer won but his rival never lost hope, control, and put up a good fight.
Never heard that expression. But Spanish speakers create new ones all the time.
