of course you are right, in hindsight i can see it now. i was thinking of cuál as it appeared more colloquial but where the hell did eres come from.

the phrase is from the reflexive verb llamarse - to call oneself
you can also say qué es su nombre or qué eres tu nombre but i think it is better to use llamarse.
