Hi geantgene,
AVicente is correct on this. It means human beings. The first time I saw this I was a bit surprised by it as well (I saw it originally as seres vivos - living beings) and if you are like me it is probably because you had never seen (or new) that the word ser (plural - seres) could be used as a noun, but this is how it is being used in this phrase.
