Ask how big her dowry is. That will surely break the ice.
Well, first of all, make sure she's not just using you as a way to get a Green Card to a better life. Sorry to be so negative, but you have to watch yourself. You say you are not familiar at all with their customs. I suggest you do some reading on República Dominicana and read up on customs and fast. Just so you know, cheating is common and accepted in the Dominican culture, much more so than American. You did not say where you are from, but Dominicans have a different idea of life and what the good life means.
For the positive side, most Dominicans are on the forefront quite religious (Catholic) and are god-fearing people. Therefore, I think you are right in asking her father before you ask her. Also, Dominicans are very family-oriented people, so in marrying her, be prepared to marry not just her immediate family, but her primos, primas, etc. as well.
