Generally speaking, ahí can be translated to mean "there."
The word ahí can be used to speak about the location of an item "in that place" (en/a ese lugar) as in: Los libros están ahí en la mesa - the books are there on the table.
It can also be used to mean "in this" (esto), or "in that" (eso) as in: Ahí esta la dificultad - There (in that/this) is the problem.
According to my dictionary, in America the word ahí is often used in place of allí.
