Is "tico" or "tica" a shortened version of "simpático" or "simpática"? Or am I making that up completely?

slang for people from Costa Rica. Maybe it originated from "simpático".

Both are correct.
Simpático is the masculine form and simpática is the feminine form.
Please review in the dictionary the differents meanings of this word.
