Columbus Day
With Columbus Day coming up in the next few days, I was wondering how people in other parts of the world celebrate (if at all) or view this holiday. I understand that in other parts of the world it may be celebrated under different names: Día de Cristobol Colón, Día de la raza, Día de la Hispanidad, etc.
Where I live (south Texas) many of the local school districts are not even taking the day off as a holiday, and there are not any celebrations planned (at least that I am aware of).
What significance does the day have in your country?

Like I said yesterday and I'm going to say today, if it wasn't for Christopher Colon, we wouldn't be here and we almost certainly wouldn't be on this page. There isn't a single country on this planet that has clean hands. I defy a single one of you to even try to name one. Every country is guilty of all kinds of atrocities against it's indigenous people, and it continues to this very day. If you are so mad about it, why dont you channel all that good energy in helping Tibet break free of China. Maybe you could send money or food or clothing to your nearest Tribe. Better yet, go to one of their casinos. How about instead of screaming about something that happened 500 years ago, you could help fight for the rights of Maya (yea, I know everyone thinks they are gone, but they aren't) in Mexico, or Columbia, or Guatemala. Those are things that are actually happening today, and then you could put your money here your mouth is. And by the way, the day of hispanidad is another way of celebrating the SpanishDict web page, or more clearly, how spanish culture has spread (sometimes good, sometimes badly) all over the world. It's so utterly ironic that people that are rabid to speak spanish at the same time bash Christopher Colon. That's just too much. If that's not the height of hypocracy, I don't know what is. If you hate the man so much, go learn French. ![]()
As a turkey, I fully protest this so call celebration.
Are we talking about thanks given or what?
Thanksgiving is an annual American holiday celebrated on the fourth Thursday in November. Most people celebrate by gathering at home with family or friends for a holiday feast. .Over three million turkeys are eaten in the USA in this one evening. ..............
I protets the slaughter of all these fine chicks. Shame on the world.
Wait a moment, wait a moment, I am no turkey my name is Gus in Spanish is pronounced goose so I might be a a goose and not a turkey.....Eat all the turkeys you want...................... Happy thanks given to one and all.
NONE! Vivo en Canada. But my mother was living in the US when she was pregnant with me and on Columbus Day, she found out that she was having twins. So it is special to me. Lunes soy Thanksgiving in Canada.
I'm in Houston and Texans don't like the fact that Columbus Day is celebrated. So many Native Americans were pushed off of their land, causing the Trail of Tears. they were pushed into reservations, like pigs in a pen.(They are humans, too like everyone else.) If Columbus' discovery hadn't occurred, many lives wouldn't have been lost for greed over land. This is my opinion and feel free to discuss yours.
In my country in central Europe, he is just another explorer.
Oh no,no please not again!!!!!!!
¡no mas!
Lets talk about the holiday "Thanks Giving " in the USA and the behavior of the guest toward their host. Talk about eating the host out of his home.
I personally do not like the holiday.....it celebrates a man who was just an explorer. Like Carlos Fuentes says,"discoveries are mutual, the natives discovered the Spaniards just as well." Do we have a Native day???
