For a long time, I wondered why the abbreviation for Los Estados Unidos was E.E.U.U. I thought E.U. would make more sense. But someone on this site (sorry, I forget who to give the credit to.) explained that because Los Estados Unidos was plural, two E's and two U's were used instead of one.

I wonder if anyone can reexplain that to make it clear to the rest of us?

Don´t put de in there, and you don´t need de América either.
