"Vaya con Dios"

Yo entiendo la frase, pero en que contexto es utiliza?

Is it used after someone's death, to try to steer someone toward God, or to try to convert someone's religious beliefs? Or just in general, such as "God bless"?

I believe it means" Go with G-d" , may G-d be with you whether it is across the street , across the country or across the universe, may G-d be with you always and you with G-d.
