Your sentence is not correct. Mi first two guesses are the following: "Un tipo de gorra" meaning "a type of cap".
"Tipo" means also a guy in slang. So it might be "el tipo de la gorra". This means " the guy wearing a cap".

No, it means a type of hat.... a type of cap actually.

I know here in Central Mexico (DF area) it always refers to a cap. Like a baseball cap of sorts. So.. A type of cap (As they already said) They use Sombrero for other types of hats. Cubierta for a hoodie...etc.
