No lo sé or no sé

Please could someone explain the difference between: no sé and no lo sé. I have heard both used in conversation.

"No lo sé" is "I don't know it" and "Yo no sé" is "I don't know". I am 90% sure.

Yeah. From my experience you can just say "No sé" pretty much every time and be ok.
