Does anyone have any tips or tricks to remember the conjugations of irregular verbs in the preterite?

Your question is, basically, silly. Irregular verbs are called "irregular" precisely because there are no simple rules to explain their forms. Depending on your background, you may term some verbs as "stem changing" or "semi-irregular", where others would simply call them "irregular". There are "degrees" of irregularity (and, in some cases, one may offer historical explanations for how some forms came into use) but, on the whole, when it comes to irregular verbs, your only option is "learn them" of "misuse them".
