Uses for the word "Vaya"

Uses for the word "Vaya"

I looked up the word vaya and instead of finding a simple one to one definition, I came across a whole slew of them.

In the context of what I was reading, it doesn't really fit under the definition.

-¡Vaya con Spot! No ha probado su cena. ¿Dónde podrá estar?-

Could someone explain the various used of vaya?

Has no one come up with the 2 all time greatest uses of "Vaya" ------- come on gang ........................(drum roll)

  • "Vaya conmigo"

and

  • "Vaya contigo"

Both of these are like hot dogs and apple pie on the 4th of July. Each one is a title of songs, book titles. And used millions of times.

On reflection this looks like "what´s up with spot, he hasn´t even tried his dinner, where could he be".

Mind you it appears a funny name for someone´s husband.

Contextually, that makes sense but Vaya is SO versatile. - quépasa, Oct 7, 2009

Spot is a dog in a children´s story. We have to start somewhere, you know. Thanks. - quépasa, Oct 7, 2009

Vaya is usually used to say "Go on! Did that really happen?" Mexicans are real big users of Vaya con Dios, but it's rare to actually hear it outside of church. wink Again, in the vocabulary where I live. Where others live, obviously, the vocabulary is different. wink

Hola quépasa

I hope you realise I was being facetious with the husband comment and not deriding your reading material.

I didn´t want to get into all the meanings of vaya as some are itemised in our dictionary. It´s like someone asking "can you explain the various uses of get".

Of course, I didn´t take the husband comment literally and I like my reading material as I´m vicariously reliving my childhood with my little one. Mmmm. So, perhaps you could direct me to a good source? - quépasa, Oct 7, 2009
It´s not like learning Vaya is of pressing importance right now. I was just curious. - quépasa, Oct 7, 2009
Hey! I remember the Dick & Jane readers. My favourite exchange is "Look, Dick. Look at Spot. Look at spot run and jump. Spot is in heat." - Moe, Oct 7, 2009
I always assumed that Spot was a male. - samdie, Oct 7, 2009
No, I don't think that Spot was in heat in those days. - Lise-Laroche, Oct 7, 2009

A common use I have heard is " ¡No te vayas! " = Don't go!
