I can think of one place you'd use the infinitive in Spanish that you wouldn't in English. As a gerund.

English: Walking is fun.

Español: Caminar es divertido.

"To walk is fun." (infinitive) is also correct. - samdie, OCT 7, 2009

It's pretty much the same as the usage in English.

I want to eat.

Yo quiero comer.

You don't need the 'a' in that sentence because you are not referring to a person or animal.
If it were "Yo te quiero a tu", you would use it.
