Actually, paraguas means "for water" and sombrilla comes from the word sombra which means shade.

Hmmm, isn't "paraguas" a combination of "parar" + "agua(s)" hence to stop water(s) literally? - cristalino, Jun 15, 2011

Sombrilla is an umbrella for sun, paraguas is for rain, both used in Mexico.

Not entirely true. Sombrilla is not just an umbrella for the sun. An umbrella is an umbrella, use it for sun, for the rain, whatever. Sombrilla is for both rain and shine.

sombrilla feminine noun 1. sunshade, parasol (quitasol) 2. umbrella (paraguas) (Colombian Spanish)

So if you go into a store and ask for a sombrilla, will what you get be waterproof or not? If so, it is an umbrella. If not, it is a parasol. A rose by any other name....
