What is the meaning of the green check mark you see in the lefthand corner of some of the posts?

You, as the asker of this question, have a box that says "Accept" for every person who answers this question.
If you check that box, then the big, green checkmark appears. And the answerer gets 20 points.
Only the asker of the question has this ability, and it can only be done one time per question. that elevates the answer chosen to the spot immediately following the original question, no matter where it fell originally.
