Truth is, why would you want to say that at all? If you want to learn the language, you must hear them talk in the most normal of settings. If you point out you are an a beginner, however advanced, they will most likely switch to english to avoid repeating themselves. That's what we do when we are around a mixed group, usually the language switches to english, just out of kindness. Why not just put yourself out there? If you don't understand, just laugh when everyone else laughs, cry when everyone else cries. That way you get accepted into the group, people feel comfortable around you. They will figure out soon enough if you can speak or not. You can see it in someone's eyes. So just go, relax, and listen! wink

It's almost like telling someone I'm an advanced beginner pianist...just before I play chopsticks!!! - Nicole-B, Sep 30, 2009

Principiante is the word for novice. I'm sure someone will be able to understand that if pronounced correctly. It will at least work as far as introductions are concerned.

If conversation with others is the reason for the event, I'm sure people will realize what level you are at once you have the opportunity to speak to them.

Have Fun!

They would understand you if you said that. I can see what your neighbor is saying but if you said that, they would be able to understand you, even if it is partly wrong. (I speak another language too and they understood me perfectly in there country.)

I agree with Nicole.

The word "principiante" is correct for a beginner.
