¿Por qué no Español?

Question

People keep asking, "Why speak Spanish?" I want to know why not speak Spanish. For me I stopped learning Scottish Gaelic, a language I really want to learn for several reasons, to learn Spanish first. Why not learn Spanish? I can not think of a reason not to. If I did have a reason I would be learning Gàidhlig right now instead. This question is to get you brain flowing in a different direction. I already read all the responses to Why learn Spanish.

Now that you have directed my thoughts in a different direction, I will attempt to answer your question.

Why would one choose not to learn Spanish? Well if traveling to one of the thirty plus Spanish speaking countries, including beautiful tropical islands, etc, is not for you, spare yourself the trouble.

If there are more important things to do like buying farm animals and playing mafia games on Facebook , Spanish will definitely get in the way.

If you are not interested in making friends with any of the millions of Spanish speaking people in the world, avoid learning the language.

If you are part of the "You are in America, now speak English" brigade, definitely don't learn Spanish.

If you want to be clueless when ordering in a Mexican Restaurant, why bother?

If you don't want to be exposed to the beauty of the language, the culture, the music, don't even think about it.

If you don't want to challenge yourself and put in the time and effort, run as fast as you can from learning Spanish.

I think it is pretty safe to say that the majority of people on this site understand the many blessings and benefits that learning a new language will add to their lives. Thanks for making me think of things from the opposite point of view. Now I am more certain than ever, that even if it takes a lifetime to become fluent, I am enjoying the process of learning and wouldn't even think of "not learning Spanish! Muchas Gracias

There are roughly 350 million reasons to learn spanish (the amount of people that speak the language, a rough guess). Just a thought.

Gaelic is not phonetic at all. An old friend of mine tried to learn that. Best of luck when you return to that.

I´ve always wanted to learn Español, myself. Now that I have a toddler, I have not better excuse. I often see Hispanic families at the playground and my child plays with their children. The parents just smile politely and while it would be nice to have a conversation WITH them, we just kindo smile like, ¨Yeah, our kids our cute¨and that´s it.

My 2.5 year old daughter is learning this faster than I can and our español tiempos de cuentos are fun.

I´ve spent some time dabbling in German, Italian (only for singing) and Anishnabe. I´m good with words and it´s just fun to converse with others.
