Imperfect vs. preterite

I am not sure if I should use the preterite or the imperfect tense with a frase like "It was important." Would I say "era importante" for "It was importante" or "fue importante" for this? I would also like to know why the imperfect or the preterite would be used with this frase.

Se puede usar ambos. Para ser correcto, el imperfecto indica que el asunto o la cosa era importante durante un período del tiempo. al opuesto, si la importancia fue de un tiempo fijo or corto sería mejor usar el pretérito .
