How to change my username....

Hi, every time I want to go and change my username, it won't let me because I have to put my email, but then it wants to not let me because I have to put my existing one, but it says "this email address already exists." What should I do?

Sarah,

I know it's a pain, but you may have to get a new yahoo email account to link to your new user name. The only problem I see with this is that you get an email when someone PM's you....and if you don't check the new email address you won't know when to check for PMs.

Does she lose her progress by doing that? - Goyo, Sep 22, 2009
Yeah, probably. I'm not sure how to do it otherwise. - --Mariana--, Sep 22, 2009

Ask Ikepueda (aka JohnJuan/ChamacoMalo).He has successfully established (at leas three) identities and should be able to provide advice based on "tried and true" experience.

Well I just tried again and it said that my email address already existed and so I think I'll just leave it alone....

I had read this post before, but thought that it had been answered so I did not comment. Several people have stated that they have accomplished the task with no errors so I assumed that those that could not were not following the procedures correctly.

I just changed my username from qfreed to changename and then changed it back to qfreed with no errors. I am using Google Chrome at the moment.

Let's check some ground rules to make sure that we are all on the same page. Are you trying to accomplish this task using Edit My Account on your profile page?

Understand that your UserID is your valid email address. Whatever UserName that you select is associated with your UserID. It is youe UserId (email) that this server uses to recognize you, not your UserName. (When I changed my UserName to changename I still had a window open from before the edit. It still had my name listed as qfreed. When I clicked on qfreed it still went to my profile page that said my UserName was namechange. In other words, it looks at your Username and looks up the UserId associated with that UserName and goes to that profile page.

Therefore, when changing you UserName do not try changing the name in your email address (your UserID). If you want to change email addresses it can be done, but that's a separate process. Here's what I entered to successfully change my UserName to changename from qfreed. Fill in all four boxes so it knows what UserID to associate the UserName with. Do not change the name in your email address. The qfreed in my email address has nothing to do with my UserName. I just happened to be using the same UserName as in my email address.

Also be aware that the server remembers old UserNames. When I tried changing my UserName to Quentin or Q it told me that the names were already taken, since I had used the previously. So make sure that you fill in all 4 boxes so it knows that the old names are yours (they are associated with your email address (UserID)). If you had old UserNames associated with old (different) email addresses you might have to go through reactivating or creating a new account to use the old UserName.

![changename][1]

[1]: namechange

The long and short of it: I see no problem with performing the task. If you can't do it, then you're going to have to provide more detail on precisely how you are trying to do it.

I am sorry, we will have to wait for Quentin, he knows everything grin

I have no clue. I have been stuck with my name for an eternity, jeje, and I am not planning to change it..

sorry, sarah, but this normally works with your old e-mail, strange, the idea that comes to mind: Have you tried with another browser? sometimes a certain browser won't let you do some things.

I can't remember his name but I noticed that another person just changed his name (within the past week or so) and he still has the same points.

Maybe you can PM Heidi and she'll know what to do. - --Mariana--, Sep 23, 2009
OK, that sounds like a good idea, but i'm at school right now and I don't think i should be on my laptop right now, at least just not finding out how to find a new account on yahoo, but I'll go ahead and take your advice and Pm her now.... - sarahjs, Sep 23, 2009

I will try to find out why you have to change the e-mail address.

I also had the same problem a while back. Some of us, for the past week, have been receiving zero rep points when we vote up questions and answers. So if you are checking into things.....Thanks - Nicole-B, Sep 22, 2009
Same with me... Was. With points. Few day earlier I changed my username without problems. - Behemoth, Sep 23, 2009

It would appear you have to have a new e-mail address since the existing is already registered. You should not lose any reputations or rewards already earned.
