A translation question.

Question

Hola,

I'm doing my Spanish homework and there is a sentence which I understood the meaning from the second sentence but it still doesn't make any sense.

-¿Desde dónde llamáis?

-Estamos en un pueblo de la Costa Brava.

Can you please explain me the structure of the question and its meaning? It seems to me really weird.

From where are you calling?

In English I would translate is as:

From where do you hail?

It sounds like someone that uses that phrase in English did a word for word translation. Whether it is understandable or not, you would have to ask a native. The desde looks dubious there.

-¿Desde dónde llamáis?....where are you calling from? or From where are you calling?

desde.......... is a preposition that indicates where something comes from or points at the time that something takes place. I been here since 1960. Estoy aqui desde 1960.

donde is an adverb that takes an accent when used in the form of a question..... ¿ de dónde eres? ...where are you from?

¿llamáis? or llamar means... calling or call as in are you calling me? the vois part is what is called voseo used mostly in Spain and Argentina,Uraguay,and Central American countries.In most other South-American countries the tú is used instead of vos. vos, is also used when refering...talking to God,or saints.

Vos is used instead of tu or you. Voseo is not to be confused with voceo which means voice.

But this isn't voseo, it's just the plain use of the verb form for vosotros. - samdie, Sep 13, 2009
