Hi Tina, and welcome to the forum!
Since I live in Kentucky, I know what you mean about the southern drawl. Those dang northerners can't even pronounce English, how are they supposed to learn Spanish? ![]()
The nice thing is, no matter where we live or what accent we have, our English doesn't make for a good Spanish accent. So we all have some learning to do.
I have some CDs that I listen to and repeat over and over. (Learn in your Car Spanish). Sometimes I get bored with them and start putting a major southern accent on my Spanish word pronunciation, just for fun!
But the thing is, saying those words with a "southern dawl"sounds funny to me, because I'm used to saying them like the people on the CDs say them.
And that is what I would recommend for you. Find a way to listen to Spanish-speaking people say the words, and repeat after them. You will learn them well that way.
¡Buena suerte!
I know exactly what you mean. My family is from Texas and I hear lots of people there who speak Spanish well but have definitely have a Texas drawl even in Spanish. There is a great scene in the mini series Centennial based on the Michenor novel. The scene takes place in Texas between Dennis Weaver as a cattle boss interviewing a cocinero. He basically spoke Spanish with a Texas accent but my wife and I both understood exactly what he was saying as did the cocinero who gave back as good as he got.
One thing that might be hearting to both of you, is that the equivalent exists in spanish. I happen to like it, just like southern english. Mexican southern drawl is kinda difficult for me, because they just have thier own little world, but I love listening to them. The puerto rican southern drawl I like a whole lot, because it's so colorful, filled with ismos and references to food. But you two don't worry yourselves too much...When someone speaks english with a spanish accent or a russian accent, don't they sound cute? ![]()
