I think this is the answer I'm native!!! I can help!! ok, You say:(teacher female) La profesora debería poner a los alumnos en detención (male teacher) El profesor debería poner a los alumnos en detención. In this case GIVE is not "DAR" in spanish. It means "PONER" only in this case.

The hard part for a non-native is to know how to translate the verb give.

el maestro/la maestra el profesor/la profesora/profe debe ....la detencíon a los alumnos/estudiantes

dar la detención los mete en la detencíon los quede en la detencíon

You need a native's insight.
