'alrededor' - 'around'

Question

Hey

Can this work be used to say sentences like "I left my house at AROUND 5 o clock".

When you think of it, it doesn't make much sense in English.
What do you mean when you say 'around 5:00'? Translate it into 'simpler' English, then you probably can translate to Spanish.

to say around 5 o'clock say Seran a las cinco

¿A qué hora es? no lo sé seran las cinco. seran here means will be around five so it would not serve to say about what time you left the house my preferance is sobre las cinco. - kenwilliams, Sep 4, 2009

Okay here's my attempt, though I'll go ahead and tell you that I don't think using around will be understood as well as say "near 5 o clock". Either way: I left my house around five = Salí de mi casa alrededor cinco.

do u use alrededor in the context he said? I'm just saying I don't know. I might say "a circa de 10". But alot of that is where is where I come from. I would understand his point, but I personally I would use that word in the context of "the store is alrededor de la escina." But yo voy a salir la casa a circa de diez. I must stress its just a way me personally would say that thing.

The store is alrededor de la esquina. (corrected spelling)

I wasn't aware that you can use "alrededor" this way. I've only learned that it mean "surrounding."

Por ejemplo: Los montañas estan alrededor del pueblo.

@Nick...Puebla is also a town, depende en context. Exemplo: Vivo en el puebla de P/R. There is a show on HITN called Mi Puebla, which talks about all things Puerto Rican. - ChamacoMalo, Sep 4, 2009

Alrededor - around, aroundabout, approximaately.

Around here - por estos alrededores. Around the end of the year - alrededor de finales de año.

Idiome:

The dictionary says "alrededor" also means "aproximadamente" and your example may be right. However, I'd say:

Salí de mi casa alrededor de las cinco.
