"Me" is a direct object pronoun, whereas "Mi" is a possessive adjective. So, if you speaking of something that happens to you, such as a person talking to you, you would say: "La persona me habla." = The person talks to me. However, if you wanted to say that you owned the book, you would say: "Mi libro" = My book

Do you need any more detail?

I do.

Me is a direct object or an indirect object or a reflexive pronoun.

Mi is a short form possessive adjective. (mío/a is the long form)

Don't confuse either of the two forms with which is an object of a preposition pronoun.

el mío and la mía are possessive pronouns
