I found this with a Google search:

The semi-colon. (El punto y coma):- The Spanish semi-colon is similar to the English use but it may also be seen after a series of commas to represent a longer pause: Le dio comida, ropa, dinero y un hogar; pero todavía no se contentó. (She gave him food, clothes, money and a home, but he still was not satisfied.) It can also serve to split lists into separate groups according to similarity: El desierto es árida, seca, rocosa; romántico y encantador. (The desert is arid, dry, rocky, romantic and charming.)

The semi-colon is also often used before the following expressions: sin embargo, no obstante and other connecting expressions. E.g.: No puedo ir a verte durante el verano; sin embargo, iré a partir de principios de septiembre. (I cannot go to visit you during the summer, however, I shall go at the beginning of September.)
