As far as actual usage I cannot tell you for sure, but in my Spanish dictionary it lists muchacho as a synonym of chico, but when I looked up muchacho, chico was not a synonym. Instead it listed adolescente.

I will venture to guess by this that chico is more universal or interchangeable; whereas, adolescente may be more suited to use with older boys.

It is probably best, however, to wait for a native speaker to answer this one.
