If a group is only female, use the feminine plural. If the group contains even one male, be it 400 females and one male, use the male plural, ellos.
Here in the southern US, if we are referring to a single person and the gender is not obvious, we naturally use "they" or "them." Technically, we are supposed to use "he" or "him."
Trust me, this is not an attempt to stomp out sexism. Whether you are sexist or not, if you are in the southern US, you probably use "they" frequently as a 3rd person singular pronoun. I certainly do.
- An example:
- "Hey, John, someone´s gonna drop some supplies today. Will you give them this paper?"
- "Sure, Boss, when´ll they get here?"
We might even know the gender of the person we´re referring to, but if we use a generic pronoun like "someone," we´ll probably use "they" or "them" later in reference to the same someone.
It irritates grammar teachers everywhere, but I think it´s kind of neat.
En realidad esta regla debe molestar a las mujeres
Pues ahí es donde te confundes, lo que a las mujeres nos molesta es esta idiotez de miembros y miembras . ¡Esto sí nos molesta! ![]()
Sounds sexist to me
Funny coming from an American, you do this all the time

According to our Spanish natives here, don't be shocked if you see ellos y ellas where people are trying to be politically correct, but gramatically it's ellos for a mixed group.
