Hola Izan: Hay un caso cuando siempre usamos ¿qué tiempo tiene? y es cuando hablamos de niños pequeños, bebes.

A mí me parece que preguntar ¿cuál es tu edad? suena algo más formal.

The more common one is the 1st. I think it's mainly just a preference thing.
