It is a verb that is not used with a direct object. For example,

  • I grew up in Spain

To grow up in that sentence does not have a direct object, so it is intransitive. However, in :

  • I grew potatoes in my vegetable garden.

the verb to grow it is transitive, because "potatoes" is the direct object.
