When one is describing a female pet and the Spanish word is typically of the male gender, do we describe it as a female? e.g. Perro or Perra, Gato or Gata?

Pets are both male and female so using an "a" to indicate female and an "o" to indicate a male would be the proper thing to do. In general this is the rule but I am sure there are exceptions to this rule (I just can't think of any right now). Hope this helps. smile The guru's will weigh in on this soon, I hope.
