I am traveling to northern Spain soon. I know some "American" Spanish but have been told I might not be understood there. How different is the Spanish there?

It is not any different from Mexican Spanish! In Spain, however, they use the origional Root language/the origion Spanish language that is, well, more difficult to learn and alot harder to understand. But if you know Mexican Spanish Well, you should have no fear! grin
