What is a "serrana"?

¿Qué cosa es una serrana? The context concerns Juan Ruiz's, "Libro de Buen Amor". It's a poem about the ideal woman...according to the author's opinion anyway. So based on the answer received so far...looks like a "seranna" or "serranilla" is a lyric poem, and in this case one about women.

Many things, depending on the country and the context. The word comes from "sierra", a mountain range of steep mountains, also called sometimes sierra in English. "Serrana" is something or someone feminine related to those mountain ranges.

  • 1) A woman who lives in a sierra
  • 2) Someone from a region in Uruguay called Sierra
  • 3) A poetic composition that used to make allusion to sierras and their people
  • 4) A kind of song from the south of Spain
  • 5) A type of meaty snack form some parts of the south of Spain
  • 6) ...

And God knows how many more. Have you thought of providing a context for us? Some words in English have over 90 meanings too, so it is very difficult to guess if you just drop a word here and ask what it means.

Certainly! The context concerns Juan Ruiz's, "Libro de Buen Amor". I'm putting two and two together now and beginning to understand a "serrana" o "serranilla" is a type of lyric poem, and in this case, one about women. - ruwhitless31, Aug 19, 2009
