Ordering food in Spanish

Though I speak Spanish fairly well, I always feel uncomfortable ordering food in Spanish. I am not sure what is expected or natural in terms of "I would like to have" and I don't want to come across as rude by saying "Un taco de pollo, por favor" but I also don't want to seem too formal with "Podría darme" (if that is as formal as I think it is).

My question is, how do native speakers usually order with an equivalent of "I would like... ", and if the two options above are acceptable. Thank you smile

So just 'Quiero' is considered acceptably polite? - unraveled, Aug 16, 2009
I.m not ignoring your question. I am not a native and don't know what is common or acceptable. - 0074b507, Aug 17, 2009
