I see the word Avatar on this web site. What is the meaning of the word Avatar?

I clipped this from an ad that was on the same page as this thread when I was reading it. Something like this could be used as an avatar.

You see it used here in that first sense. And you can upload your own avatar as part of your profile.

I was thinking about using an avatar myself, instead of my picture, but chickened out feeling unworthy of the avatar (icon, two dimensional picture) that I would have wanted to choose but not wanting any other, either.

I think you will agree that avatars are a lot of fun! Lots of people use them here at/on SpanishDict.com.
