2. (legal)
a. to pronounce
El jurado dictó su veredicto tras varios días de deliberaciones.The jury pronounced their veredict after several days of deliberation.
b. to pass
La jueza dictó una condena de tres años para el acusado.The judge passed a prison sentence of three years for the defendant.
c. to issue
El jefe de estado dictó un nuevo decreto legislativo.The head of state issued a new legislative decree.
d. to enact (a law)
El tribunal dictó una ley contra la violencia de género.The court enacted a law against gender violence.
3. (to instruct) (Latin America)
Regionalism used in Latin America: all the countries in South America, Central America, and the Caribbean. Does not include Spain.
a. to teach
Mi madre dicta francés en una universidad de París.My mother teaches French at a university in Paris.
b. to deliver
El orador dictó una charla muy amena sobre psicología.The speaker delivered an enjoyable talk on psychology.
c. to give
La conferencia que dictó el especialista fue de lo más interesante.The conference the specialist gave was really interesting.
An intransitive verb is one that does not require a direct object (e.g. The man sneezed.).
