2 preguntas: sin y pero/ placement of ?no? before verb

I know there was a post some time ago about when to use 'sin' and when to use 'pero' but I can't find it. I want to say "Por varios días no tuvimos que a nada sin (o pero') comida y agua." (For several days we had to live on nothing but food and water) Also, is the placement of the negative "no" correct? When there are two verbs (tuvimos que and vivir) does the 'no' go before tuvimos or before vivir?

Okay, I should have explained that this is a famous W.C.Fields quote that goes: "Reminds me of my safari in Africa. Someone forgot to bring the corkscrew and for several days we had to live on nothing but food and water." My weekly spanish coffee group likes to translate stuff like this.

Are you trying to say "...without food and water..." or "...but food and water..."?
I may be missing something in your question, but for days all we had to live on was food and water seems odd. Besides clothing and shelter what else do you need? I am just trying to understand the question better and see if I am mising something.
