Azucena scene 5 ''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''

Azucena goes to the shade under the tin eaves of the house
lays down the baby on a piece of coarse cloth and cleans it.

Todos los bienes del campesino se encuentran es ése lugar;

There were all the campesinos belongings in that passageway;
she cleans the young child expertly, using the barest utensils.

Ella acepta todo; esto es todo lo que conoce; sólo es una niña;
la hija mayor, que sabía ella? Sus ojos todavía están cerrados.

She accepts all; it's all she had ever known; she is only a child;
the oldest daughter, what did she know? Her eyes are still closed.

No muestra inclinación hacia un destino propio en lo absoluto;

She did not show any suggestion at all of any destiny of her own;
she acted as if it were her part to do whatever she had been told.

El trabajo ha sido suyo desde que nació y esta acostumbrada a él;

Hardship has been her's since her birth, and she is used to it;
the raw life in which she has been existing has made her strong.

The innocence of her is fresh with sixteen year old womanhood;
she is budding like the hotland girls with sap flowing through her.

Azucena le da el bebé a su madre; y ella regresa a lavar la ropa sucia;

Azucena gives the baby to her mom, returning to wash dirty laundry;
ritualistic washing motions ensue, as she prepares the soapy water.

she is budding like the hotland girls with sap flowing through her.

Her fresh innocence is that of a sixteen year old on the threshold of womanhood.
