Actually, the sport was originally called "association football," which was so named because it conformed to the rules of the The Football Association. The name was abbreviated as assoc., which eventually evolved into "soccer." Interestingly, that nickname was apparently coined by an Englishman (in the 1880's), although the sport is now called football in England.

People say football because they like to kick the ball with the foot all the time, I guess. In Spanish we have taken the English word, and re-spelled it as "fútbol" (this was some time ago, when we were still trying to keep Spanish spelling logical).

USA they already had a kind of football (where the ball is only kick the ball with the foot 1% of the time), and someone used "Football Association" to create soccer.
