*La ultima sílaba se llama aguda / the last syllable is called aguda
Se acentúa si termina en vocal, "N" o "S"/ it's accented if it ends in the letters "N" or "S"

Gracias por su ayuda*

All these words are stressed on the last syllable, but only the ones ending in vowel, N or S take the accent:

ca-mión
ve-loz
cla-vel
ver-dad
ve-rás
a-mó

Conversely, all these words are stressed on the penultimate syllable, but only those ending in vowel, N or S are NOT accented:

te-nis
ár-bol
a-san
A-na
cé-nit

P.S. There is no written accent in the word "gracias."

You only get a written accent on the last syllable if it is in fact stressed and ends in one of those letters.

In gracias, the accent is on the first syllable: GRA-cias. It doesn't need a written accent because by default, words ending in s or n have the accent on the next-to-last syllable.

aguda is a word accented on the last syllable. The accent is written in such a case if the word ends in "n" or "s".
