Liberados - Liberar

Question

I was reading a news story and the headline says:

100 cocodrilos son liberados en el río Viejo.

It's clear enough that 100 crocodiles were freed in to the Viejo River. My question is about the verb liberar used here. I can't find "liberados" in any of the conjugation charts. Shouldn't it read: 100 cocodrilos son liberábamos en el río Viejo'"

Liberado is the adjective formed with the past participle of "liberar".

An adjective used this way (and the same is true in English grammar) is what is known as a "predicate adjective" (the "predicate" being "what is said about the subject"). In this case the emphasis is on the fact that they are in a "sate of being free" not on the _action_ of freeing. Were the emphasis on the action, one could say "Se liberaron a 100 crocodrilos..."
