Quinceañeras (the parties, not the girls) are so popular here in California that most Anglos know the word, too. Shops sell special goods and services for them.

James, a quinceañera is simply a girl who is 15 years old. Not the celebration.

I thought you might mean "la puesta de largo" which is a celebration , here in Spain, I think, only celebrated in old fashioned communities, when a girl turns 15 and from that moment on can put on long dresses.

In Argentina "quinceañera" is the girl who turns 15 and the celebration is called "La fiesta de 15"
