Is there a specific or different way of translating Dominican spanish?

My girlfriend lives in the Dominican Republic and I have a very hard time translating her e-mails

Just a trick that I see in any Spanish-speaking country slang:

"K" is often written instead of "que."

That includes the word "que" itself as well as words that begin with those three letters.

"k pasa?"=¿Qué pasa?

Te kiero.=Te quiero.

I used to have a lot trouble understanding some things that are said by those coming from the Caribbean, but now I just try to fill in the missing "s" and "dado," e.g.,

¿Cómo etá? (como estás)

Me gusta pec'ao. (me gusta pescado)

So they type it this way, too? Or are you just talking about how it sounds when they speak? - missy8888, Mar 22, 2012

There shouldn't be much difference with the exception of some local slang. A lot of it could be improper spelling, shorthand, etc. - It is almost impossible to say without seeing an example. If you have normally have no problems with translating, this should present little if no challenge.

Slang varies a lot from country to country. I've heard things from the Caribean said in Spanish that I did't understand at all. Here in Chile happens the same, when people comes here from other Spanish speaking countries, they don't understand us much. - comunacho, Mar 22, 2012
