Don't think me rude, but if you use "Rhinoclemmys areolata" I think you'll get lots of references and it will just be a question of combing through them for the answer you want.

Because the turtle is indigenous to the Americas, it could a hispanicized form of a word an indigenous tribe used to describe it in their native language. There are many borrowed words in Spanish borrowed from the Nahuatl language. Again, this is just an educated guest, so don't quote me.
