Is my translation correct? I don't need a literary one, just revising the meaning.

...y a todas horas se inventaba tareas para que el hijo se hiciera cuanto antes un hombre de provecho.

...so as the child before growing up would do as much as it is possible to be profitable?

Advice can only be singular.

How about this: At all hours, (someone) would invent tasks so the son, as soon as possible, would become a man of ascendancy.
