I would like the option of hearing a male voice pronounce the English words.

The male voice reads Spanish. The female voice reads English. If you do the Listen parts in Learn English you will hear the female voice. In Learn Spanish's Listen section you will hear the male voice.

Occasionally the programs mess up and the male tries to pronounce English words as if they were Spanish and the female pronounces Spanish words as if they are English. Besides being hilarious, it's very interesting to hear the difference between the pronunciation of the letters in the two languages.

It doesn't exactly "change" from time to time. You are just finding some of the rare exceptions. The male "voice" is computer generated and is what you can always expect. The female voice is attached only to certain sets and as best as I can tell, the source of which is still being kept secret.
